What do you do about external resorption? We know that when asymptomatic and vital these teeth can stay for years and not need treatment. But what would you do when time is an issue and you have to make a decision? Here is a case of a 15 year old female with post orthodontic extensive external resorption on tooth #19. There is a distal lingual oral communication, the tooth is asymptomatic and vital. The choice to leave it as is may compromise future options so some decisions need to be made now. Here are a few options I have considered do you have others? 1. 1111 Leave #19 as long as possible and deal with it in the future, due to possible bone loss in the area of resorption it may make an implant more difficult and transplantion of third molars will no longer be an option. Extract tooth #19 as well as all four third molars and place an implant in area #19 when mandiblar growth has stopped. Extract tooth #19 and all third molars except #17 and orthodontically mesialize #17 and 18. Extract tooth #19 and transplant #17 in #19 position, extract other third molars. From what I hear the transplant option has about a 75% success rate and mesializaton of #17 and 18 is a bit less successful about 50%. I am not sure about these %. Does anyone else have figures on this?
